The research focus can be in any related field and it’s advantageous if the applicant can show that their research complements current research at the department with potential collaboration points. A geomorphologist from any sub-discipline could fit into the department’s research profile (https://www.umu.se/en/department-of-ecology-and-environmental-science/research/). Umeå, the largest city in northern Sweden with a vibrant population of ~130,000, is located at almost 64° N and is well-situated for arctic and sub-arctic research. See the announcement and application procedure here : https://umu.varbi.com/en/what:job/jobID:371501/?token=90c216b0c745c897c17e591db399e441 Application deadline: February 15, 2021 Further details: Sweden’s academic career system is slightly different than in some other countries. Dear all: We have fully funded PhD positions available at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, USA. The interest is in the three following topics: * River and lake ice mapping using optical and microwave satellites. Strong knowledge in remote sensing and image processing is required in addition to excellent coding skills in Python. * Assimilation of river ice information in flow routing schemes to enhance the forecast of river discharge in northern watersheds. Familiarity with river hydraulic models and flow routing especially in cold regions is preferable. Excellent coding skills in Python and/or experience with numerical models like WRF-HYDRO are required. * Flood forecasting in urban watersheds using hyper resolution models in coastal regions. Experience with high resolution precipitation products like MRMS is needed. Experience in hydrological modeling in urban area using models like WRF-HYDRO is needed in addition to excellent coding skills. The goal is to work on the coupling of CONUS-wide models like the NWM with urban high resolution models to issue real time forecast of urban flooding. Prospective students will work under the supervision of Dr. Marouane Temimi, Associate Professor in the Civil, Environmental, and Ocean Engineering Department at Stevens Institute of Technology. Applicants should email their applications to Dr. Marouane Temimi: https://web.stevens.edu/facultyprofile/?id=2418 Applications should include a cover letter, the candidate’s resume, transcripts, 2 to 3 references, and copies of publications or examples of previous projects and achievements related to the topics. Kind regards, <br> Dr. Marouane Temimi  +
Dear coastal people, I am recruiting a PhD student at Louisiana State University starting Spring 2021. The student will work on a project funded by the USACE through the US Coastal Research Program (https://uscoastalresearch.org/). The goals of this project are to: # Quantify the contribution of the various marsh loss mechanisms under different environmental settings, # Understand how existing data-driven metrics of marsh health are related to different marsh deterioration trajectories, and # Use existing marsh metrics for validating marsh evolution models. The student will use and improve a new cutting-edge model for marsh morphodynamics (MarshMorpho2D). The student will collaborate with Dr. Neil Ganju at USGS in Woods Hole, as well as with other scientists at the USACE Engineer Research and Development Center. I am looking for a highly motivated student with a background in coastal geomorphology, nearshore oceanography, coastal engineering, or related fields. The ideal candidate will have experience with numerical methods and programming (e.g., Matlab, Fortran, Python, R). Applicants are encouraged to contact the PI of the project (Giulio Mariotti, gmariotti@lsu.edu) before applying and include a current resume or CV. For a snapshot of the research performed in my lab, see https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=aAYz8YsAAAAJ&hl=en&oi=ao The student will be enrolled in the Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences, which is housed within LSU's unique College of the Coast and the Environment. Dear colleagues, I’d like to invite prospective PhD students in your network to apply to my group in Rice Civil and Environmental Engineering, where I’m starting in January. Research will focus on developing infrastructure management strategies that integrate nonstructural instruments (including insurance, nature-based solutions, early warning systems, and household-scale adaptation) into existing infrastructure to improve near-term system performance while simultaneously increasing capacity to flexibly manage deeply uncertain long-term changes. Through generative environmental modeling, uncertainty quantification/characterization, and optimization as well as deep collaboration with academic and community partners, we’re hunting for for effective and widely applicable strategies. Strong candidates have strong quantitative and critical thinking skills, are curious to explore new ideas, perspectives, and methods, and can clearly articulate their research goals. Funding is not tied to a particular project but applicants should articulate interest in mission-oriented basic research that advances the broad themes described above.
