Group Leader of Helmholtz Young Investigator Group, Jülich, Germany
The Agrosphere Institute at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH is looking for an excellent group leader with expertise on
continental scale convection permitting modeling of earth surface processes using integrated numerical models.
Suitable candidates contact Harry Vereecken h.vereecken@fz-juelich.de with a short CV.
This call is directed towards excellent researchers who have between two and six years’ post-doctoral experience and documented research experience abroad (see Annex 2).
The most important selection criterion is the outstanding quality of the candidates (CV, publications, citation index, awards, etc.) and the planned research project (innovation capacity, relevance, structure, coherence, feasibility). Further criteria include the strategic importance for the nominating institution (the host Helmholtz Center) and clearly discernible synergy effects resulting from the cooperation between the Helmholtz Center and the partner university.
The Helmholtz Young Investigator Group program is primarily a recruiting instrument. Candidates already employed by a Helmholtz Center are eligible but have to demonstrate international experience, competitiveness and mobility to a special degree.
The Helmholtz Association especially wishes to attract promising female scientists to continue their careers in science. At least 40% of Young Investigator Group leader positions in this call should therefore be awarded to women.
Young Investigator Groups thus generally receive a minimum of €300,000 a year for six years. This covers costs for:
* the group leader position, normally at E 14/15 TVöD (collective agreement 14/15 for civil service employees),
* scientific or technical staff (normally three or four),
* expenses for materials, travel, and investments. +
Harsh and me are looking for a talented PhD student with good understanding of hydrological processes (ideally some background in isotope hydrology).
Profile:
* MSc degree in Hydrology, Environmental Engineering or Sciences, Physics or related disciplines
* Experience in field work and in-depth understanding of hydrological processes
* Strong numerical skills and previous experience in modelling and programming (Python or R)
* Effective communication in English and acting responsibly
* Courageous, open, curious, treating others equitably and with respect

Hello All,
I’m currently recruiting for a PhD and a 1 year postdoc position associated with a recently funded NSF grant to study the role of the uplift of the Gangedese Mountains within the Himalayan-Tibetan orogen on drainage reorganization within the southern margin of the Tibetan plateau. This project is in collaboration with Andrew Laskowski at the Montana State University and Mike Taylor at the University of Kansas. The primary tasks for both the PhD and postdoc will be landscape evolution modeling and topographic analysis / topographic tool development. Both the PhD and postdoc will be working closely with the other PIs and their students to integrate new field data into the landscape evolution models being developed by the LSU based team.
For the postdoc position, I am ideally looking for someone with prior experience in landscape evolution modeling and/or python (we will be using LandLab). A more formal advertisement for the postdoc will appear in the coming months. The start date for the postdoc is flexible, with the earliest possible start date being sometime in early 2020. For the PhD student, I am recruiting for the fall semester of 2020. If you are interested in either position, please feel free to contact me or find me at GSA or AGU. If you know of someone who might be interested in either position, please forward this email onto them.
Thank you,<br>

'''Tenure Track Scientist - Geology & Geophysics'''<br>
'''Job Summary'''<br>
The Department of Geology and Geophysics (G&G) at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites candidates to apply to the open full-time tenure track position on our scientific staff*. We seek to hire at the Assistant Scientist level, but exceptional candidates at more senior levels may be considered.
We seek applicants with expertise in the broad area of Coastal Systems, studying processes including coastal change, compound hazards, and adaptation. We seek candidates who would complement the existing strengths in G&G and other WHOI Departments. Research areas of interest include impacts of storms, climate change, and sea-level rise; geomorphology, sediment transport, and hydrodynamics; and tools such as modeling, remote sensing, and machine learning/big data. We welcome those working across a range of timescales and environments, including but not limited to the open coast, wetlands, deltas, barrier islands, coral reef environments, and the urban and built environment.
The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary department with a highly diverse science portfolio spanning solid-earth chemical and physical processes, coastal processes, climate and paleoclimate, climate solutions and the deep biosphere. We are seeking candidates whose research complements, diversifies, and strengthens existing programs on global geochemical cycles as driven by solid-earth processes, including high-temperature geochemistry/petrology, volcanism, plate-boundary processes, seafloor geology, and the subsurface carbon cycle and related biogeochemistry. This includes both purely fundamental scientific inquiry and applied or solutions-driven research targeting pressing societal issues. We especially encourage applications from candidates who would take advantage of existing analytical facilities, such as the WHOI Plasma Facility and the Northeastern National Ion Microprobe Facility. We encourage candidates to become familiar with WHOI’s recently completed “Vision2030” strategic planning.
WHOI is located on Cape Cod in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, a world-renowned center of excellence in marine, biomedical, and environmental science, with proximity to the research hubs of Boston, MA and Providence, RI. Its mission is to advance our understanding of the ocean and its interaction with the Earth system, and to communicate this understanding for the benefit of society. WHOI is the largest private, non-profit oceanographic institution in the world, with staff and students numbering approximately 1,000. Together with an additional ~500 affiliated personnel associated with the scientific endeavors of the Institution, WHOI is home to a vibrant scientific community that has a strong international component.
WHOI offers a comprehensive benefit package that includes but is not limited to relocation assistance, medical and dental plans, childcare subsidy, housing assistance, tuition assistance, an employer contribution retirement plan, vacation time, flexible scheduling, and family illness days. The Institution also provides dual career services for assisting the applicant’s spouse or partner should they be impacted by your career decision. We have a dedicated team who will work with applicants to identify and explore available options within WHOI and the broader Woods Hole community, as well as in Boston and Providence.
Please contact Andrew Ashton (aashston@whoi.edu) for any inquiry regarding this position.

Hi All,
My group has an opening for a PhD student (starting in August 2021) on an NSF-funded project examining the formation of autogenic waterfalls in bedrock rivers. The PhD will focus on laboratory flume experiments, but there will be opportunities for field work, digital terrain analysis, and modeling as well. Please help me spread the word and forward this to any students you know that may be interested.
For prospective students: please first read through the 'Opportunities' page on my website (http://joelscheingross.com/opportunities/) and make sure my approach to advising matches what you're looking for. If so, don't hesitate to send me an e-mail (it's best if you include a CV and a short note on your background / previous research experience) and I can happily provide more information about the project.
The project will take place at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) and students can apply either to the Department of Geological Science and Engineering (https://www.unr.edu/geology/graduate/admissions-information applications due Jan. 1) or to the Graduate Program in Hydrologic Sciences (https://www.unr.edu/hydrologic-sciences/graduate-programs#admissions applications due Dec. 15).
