We currently have a funded PhD studentship … We currently have a funded PhD studentship available at the University of Birmingham, Birmingham Institute for Sustainability and Climate Action (BISCA; https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/centres-institutes/birmingham-institute-for-sustainability-and-climate-action-bisca/phd-studentships). This is an excellent opportunity to join the vibrant, interdisciplinary BISCA community on an exciting project: “Foundation AI Model for Assessing Human Influence on Hydroclimatic Compound Hazards in the UK.” You will work with Dr Shasha Han, Dr Xilin Xia, Dr Jianbo Jiao, and Prof David Hannah, in collaboration with industry partner AtkinsRéalis.

The project aims to develop the first AI-driven framework that incorporates multi-modal hydrological data and human impact data (building on a previously developed foundation AI model) to enhance the modelling of hydroclimatic compound hazards in the UK. A key objective is to improve our understanding of how human activities influence the dynamics of these compound hazards. More details here: https://www.findaphd.com/phds/project/foundation-ai-model-for-assessing-human-influence-on-hydroclimatic-compound-hazards-in-the-uk/?p186298

This is a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with experts across disciplines. The PhD candidate will work at the forefront of AI and hydrology, gaining expertise in AI, Hydrological Science, Water Engineering, and Computer Science, and collaborating with partners in academia, government, and industry - particularly through BISCA’s networks.

Successful candidates will receive full coverage of home tuition fees and a UKRI-rate stipend (£20,780 for 2025/26), along with access to additional funding for training and development opportunities.

If interested, please apply by August 22!
Any questions, you are very welcome to email Shasha at s.han.2@bham.ac.uk.

Dr Shasha Han

Assistant Professor in Physical Geography - Hydrology and Water Resources

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

University of Birmingham
nvironmental Sciences
