The Institut de physique du globe de ParisThe Institut de physique du globe de Paris (IPGP) is looking for an expert in the modeling of Earth surface processes for a post-doctoral research contract as part of the German-French project "PALAVAS - Present and pAst weathering fLuxes from tropicAl Volcanic islAndS", jointly funded by the French ANR and the German DFG, and coordinated on the French side at IPGP.

The full description of the offer is available here: https://www.ipgp.fr/en/institute/careers/post-doctoral-researcher-in-modelling-weathering-on-tropical-volcanic-islands/

In the PALAVAS project, the interaction between chemical and physical erosion on tropical volcanic islands will be assessed. Within this framework, two PhD projects on the German side (at the German Research Centre for Geosciences, GFZ Potsdam; and at the Freie Universität (FU) Berlin) and two post-doctoral research positions on the French side (IPG Paris and EDYTEM Chambéry) will aim to test the hypothesis that in volcanic islands, the degree and rates of chemical and physical erosion depend on the age of the underlying bedrock. Over time, however, century- and millennia-scale variations in climate can modify weathering and erosion rates, and these trends can be preserved in terrestrial and marine sedimentary archives. We will use classical elemental geochemistry, as well as beryllium and lithium isotopes as tracers of current and past weathering and erosion rates, in conjunction with biomarker analysis and numerical modeling.

The post-doctoral researcher recruited at IPGP will focus on modeling past and present weathering fluxes to quantify the influence of basaltic volcanic islands on the carbon cycle and atmospheric pCO2. This work will be carried out using the GEOCLIM model. This model calculates weathering fluxes as a function of slope, lithology and climate. Initially, the post-doc will calculate modern fluxes using ERA5 reanalyses to test the effect of climate, and based on the topography and lithology of the islands of Guadeloupe and Réunion. Secondly, the post-doc will study the temporal evolution of these fluxes, essentially over the Quaternary, to determine whether they have changed drastically.

The deadline for applications is December 20, 2023. Applications should be sent to bouchez@ipgp.fr et lehir@ipgp.fr.

Julien Bouchez and Guillaume Le Hir (on behalf of the PALAVAS consortium), Institut de physique du globe de Paris

Anne Bernhardt (she/her)

Professor for Sedimentary Systems

Freie Universität Berlin

Institute of Geological Sciences

Sedimentary Systems & Tectonics

Malteserstraße 74-100

D-12249 Berlin, Germany

Email: anne.bernhardt@fu-berlin.de

Web: https://www.geo.fu-berlin.de/en/geol/fachrichtungen/geologie/mitarbeiter_neu/Professoren/abernhardt/index.html

Twitter: @annebernhardt_
en/geologie/mitarbeiter_neu/Professoren/abernhardt/index.html
Twitter: @annebernhardt_
