The Department of Land and Agroforest Envi … The Department of Land and Agroforest Environments, University pf Padova, Italy, is looking for a PhD Candidate in Climate- and Environmental Sciences to fill a three-year position from 1st of October 2023.</br></br></br>The position is available within the global call for applications "UNIPhD - Eight century legacy of multidisciplinary research and training for the next-generation talents” (closing date: 31 January 2023).</br></br>Selected early stage researchers benefit from very attractive employment conditions and will be recruited through a 3-year contract starting 1 October 2023.</br></br>For further information go to the call website: https://uniphd.eu/ (in English). </br></br>The project, titled “Projected changes in flood occurrence at convection-permitting scale across an alpine transect”, aims to shed light on the relationship between future changes in extreme precipitation and flooding – particularly high-end extreme events (i.e., those occurring twice or fewer times per century), which are rare to nonexistent in observed time series – based on high-space/time resolution climate simulations from convection-permitting models. The project will address this data scarcity problem by using a variety of methods, including stochastic streamflow generation and ensemble modelling using Single Model Initial-condition Large Ensembles (SMILEs) across an Alpine transect where accurate long- term series of flood events and climate simulations at convection permitting scale are available.</br></br>To be successful the potential candidate needs:</br>* An outstanding MSc in environmental- or natural sciences (e.g. meteorology, hydrology, climate sciences, physical geography), or environmental engineering</br>* Proven knowledge of statistical methods</br>* Proven knowledge about hydrological analysis and modeling</br>* Proven programming skills in, e.g., Fortran, Python, R, or Matlab</br>* Good communication skills (writing and speaking) in English</br></br>If you are interested in this positions, please apply before 31 January 2023.
