The heat source is due to the slow flow of deep water heated by the normal geothermal gradient and contained in the carbonate rocks buried beneath the Cenozoic sedimentary cover. The carbonate rocks constitute the reservoir for the thermal waters and are also a source of heat for the waters confined in the overlying Late Cenozoic sediments. Locally, where the carbonates are outcropping, the thermal waters contained in the reservoir escape naturally, as in the Roman baths of Monfalcone (North-East Italy).</br></br>In the proximity of these springs, the interaction between the waters of the geothermal reservoir and those of the surface porous aquifers is very complex. The current global energy and environmental crisis requires efforts to improve the knowledge of renewable energy resources available in the region.</br></br>The objective of this research project is to develop a conceptual model by integrating geophysical and geological data and numerical modelling to characterise regional geothermal resources and their interaction with shallower aquifers. In addition, a laboratory-scale physical model will be developed to reproduce the interaction between the fractured karst aquifer that hosts the geothermal resources and the overlying porous aquifers.
