As part of a study to improve hydrologic p … As part of a study to improve hydrologic prediction of snowmelt runoff in mountain watersheds, we seek an outstanding scientist to join our research group at the University of Northern British Columbia (https://www.unbc.ca) as a postdoctoral fellow (PDF). Runoff from seasonal snowpacks represents a major component of annual streamflow in British Columbia, and hydroelectric power generation requires novel approaches to improve daily-to-seasonal water forecast models. The successful applicant will develop methods to assimilate LiDAR-derived snow depth data and satellite-derived snow cover extents to improve estimates of snow water equivalence and stream forecasting in mountain basins.

We are particularly interested in applicants with prior experience in numerical modeling, data assimilation and analytical hydrology. Minimum requirements for this position include a PhD in a suitable discipline (e.g. Environmental Physics, Atmospheric Science, Earth or Environmental Sciences, Geography, or Computing Sciences). Programming proficiency (Python, R, Fortran90, C or C#) is required. The PDF is fully funded for two years through a Mitacs Elevate fellowship (https://www.mitacs.ca/en/programs/elevate) which includes formal training in scientific research management. The successful PDF will also work with us to mentor two MSc students engaged in this research, and interact directly with our industry partner BC Hydro.

One of Canada’s top-ranked small universities, UNBC offers exceptional interdisciplinary research opportunities. Prince George, located near the center of British Columbia, is a diverse, thriving, and affordable community, with a wide range of outdoor recreation opportunities.

Interested applicants should send the following items to Dr. Brian Menounos (brian.menounos@unbc.ca) and Dr. Joseph Shea (joseph.shea@unbc.ca) by 15 September 2019:
* A curriculum vitae
* A cover letter describing why they are interested in the position
* The names of two professional/academic referenceses of two professional/academic references
