We have several openings for postdoctoral … We have several openings for postdoctoral positions to join our Earth Surface Process Modelling Group at the GFZ (Potsdam, Germany) where we focus on developing and using quantitative tools to study the evolution and dynamics of the Earth’s surface over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales in a variety of tectonic and climatic environments. Our focus is on quantifying the interactions between surface processes, climate, tectonics, and biota using a broad range of observational constraints, often in collaboration with other groups at the GFZ (Geomorphology, Earth Surface Geochemistry, Climate Dynamics and Landscape Evolution, Seismic Hazard and Risk Dynamics, and many others). Our group has recently grown with the appointment of three senior scientists, Kim Huppert, Hui Tang, and Luca Malatesta, who have greatly broadened the group’s activities and interests.

We have funding to support exceptional early-career scientists with interests in a broad range of topics in landscape evolution, including, but not limited to, weathering front propagation, landslide and debris flow initiation and hazard, links between macroevolutionary processes and landscape evolution, effects of thresholds and variability on erosion processes, bedrock coastal erosion, alluvial fan evolution, carbonate landscape development, stratigraphic signal preservation, and machine learning applications in geomorphology.

We welcome inquiries and applications from candidates interested in pursuing specific topics (please visit our webpage https://www.gfz-potsdam.de/sektion/erdoberflaechenprozess-modellierung/projekte/) or from candidates who wish to develop their own independent research project in collaboration with one or more members of our research group. Projects could focus on developing, improving, and/or calibrating landscape evolution models or integrating diverse datasets and models to improve our understanding of landscape evolution and its links to climate, tectonics, and biota in specific environments.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) hosts a vibrant, international research community with broad interests in earth surface and solid earth sciences, with strong connections to partner institutions focused on climate, ecological, marine, and polar research. The GFZ is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse workforce. We encourage applications from candidates of all gender, race, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, and national or ethnic identity.

Please contact any of us directly to obtain more information or to discuss potential research projects. Or, send your CV and a letter of motivation explaining how and why you think you can contribute to our section’s activities to lukas.becker@gfz-potsdam.de.activities to lukas.becker@gfz-potsdam.de.
