Gullies, rills, and other erosion within concentrated flows are the dominant causes of soil loss from hillslopes and agricultural regions. They can cause severe water quality impairment and landscape degradation, they can have important implications for biogeochemical cycles, and they can have devastating, long-lasting effects on society. It is for these reasons that scientists, land managers, and practitioners have sought to understand the processes of gully erosion, to engage in field- and laboratory-based experimental monitoring and management programs, and to develop theoretical and analytical arguments for soil erosion prediction technology.
