We would like to share an open PhD positio … We would like to share an open PhD position at Umeå University (Sweden), hosted by the Department of Ecology, Environment and Geoscience (EMG).

'''Position title:''' PhD in Physical Geography

'''Focus:''' Perennial snowfields and evapotranspiration in northern Sweden

'''Location:''' Umeå, Sweden

'''Employment:''' Full-time, temporary (doctoral training position)

'''Application deadline:''' April 6, 2026

This project aims to develop a mechanistic understanding of how perennial snowfields regulate growing-season water availability, evapotranspiration (ET), and surface energy balance in Arctic and alpine environments. In northern Scandinavian mountains, snowfields act as both water sources and cooling agents, influencing hydrological processes, plant water use, and ecosystem resilience. However, their contribution to ET, groundwater recharge, and streamflow remains poorly constrained, particularly under climate warming.

The PhD research will combine field observations and modeling approaches. Fieldwork will be conducted near Abisko in northern Sweden, including eddy covariance measurements of ET around perennial snowfields. The candidate will also analyze data from flux towers, meteorological stations, and hydrological systems, and contribute to the development of physically based hydrological models.

The position is supervised by Associate Professor Ylva Sjöberg and involves collaboration with an interdisciplinary team across Umeå University, the University of Gothenburg, the University of Oulu, and the University of Cologne.

We are seeking candidates with a strong background in hydrology, physical geography, or related fields, with interests in land-atmosphere interactions, Arctic systems, and quantitative or modeling approaches. Experience in programming, numerical modeling, and fieldwork in remote environments is considered an asset.

For full details and application instructions, please visit:
https://www.umu.se/en/work-with-us/open-positions/phd-position-in-physical-geography-focusing-on-perennial-snowfields-and-evapotranspiration-in-northern-sweden_909908/

'''Contact:'''

Associate Professor Ylva Sjöberg (ylva.sjoberg@umu.se)

Please feel free to share this opportunity within your networks.

Best regards,

Xiuqiang Liu (Postdoc)

Department of Ecology, Environment and Geoscience

Umeå University

SE-901 87 Umeå, Sweden
ology, Environment and Geoscience
