The model explores the balance between erosion and deposition that occurs through time as bottom shear stresses change relative to tidal flat elevation. Point Tidal Flat has been used to demonstrate that the transition from tidal flat to salt marsh occurs abruptly, rather than continuously, when sediment input reaches a critical value related to local wind climate and fetch length of a specific basin. A recent Human dimensions workshop: Linking Earth System Dynamics and Social System Modeling, was held in Boulder last May with the goal to assess the intellectual, informatics, and material resources needed to develop global models of human systems dynamics and couple them with models of Earth system dynamics in order to further understanding of the interactions and feedbacks within the integrated human-environmental system that dominates the globe today.
