Hydraulic Bore into Shear

Project description

We are expanding Zach Borden's work on the circulation model onto the case of hydraulic bores propagating into shear

Objectives

List the main objectives of your project

Time-line

Analytic work started in September 2013; rough computational simulations began December of the same year. Work will continue until at least 2017

Models in use

We will use Zach Borden and Eckart Meiburg's circulation model which utilizes the vorticity equation to remove energy assumptions in certain flow cases. The simulations that we are running are in-house codes.

Results

The circulation model is successful in predicting the bore velocity. However, the bore tends to develop in an interesting manner that we are planning on investigating in future research

Here is a comparison for the same conditions at a different Reynolds/Peclet number.
