The following target goals were formulated by attendees. Each one identified his areas of interest and responsibilities. Here is what we have:
#get everyone up to speed on CCMP, CSDMS and model integration pathway that CSDMS is employing (modified CCA for the Architecture and framework, BABEL as the language independent compiler, modified OpenMI for interface standards etc etc),
#get everyone up to speed on appropriate Chesapeake modeling tools in use by the CCMP community,
#get everyone up to speed on the valuable field data that CCMP offers for code testing,
#develop some simple, doable short term, intermediate term and longer term goals for the group, and
#assign some tasks to the members

Chesapeake Focus Research Group Reports

November 2009 Meeting

The CCMP FRG had its second meeting on November 10th at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester Point. Attendees included Mark Brush, Victoria Coles, Dave Forrest, Carl Friedrichs, Marjy Friedrichs, Courtney Harris, Dave Jasinski, John Klinck, Wen Long, Scott Peckham, Malcolm Scully, Jian Shen, and Pat Wiberg.

The main outcome of the meeting were the following short, intermediate and long-term goals:

Short term

  • Recognize the Chesapeake FRG to be the academic research arm of the Chesapeake Community Modeling Program.
  • Populate the Chesapeake FRG pages with existing open-source Chesapeake Bay region models.
  • List publications which have used these models.
  • Post links to freely available model forcing data, such as bathymetry, wind, runoff, etc.
  • Pursue avenues for group proposals including funding for full-time of nearly full-time Chesapeake FRG oriented personnel, such as a dedicated post-doc.
  • Give priority to Chesapeake FRG related projects which focus on models with management implications, such as land use, water quality, ecosystem function, storm surge, etc.

Intermediate term

  • Implement a version of ROMs for the Chesapeake Bay at CSDMS in IRF format. Promising candidates include CHIMP and/or ChesROMS.
  • Implement the EPA/NOAA Chesapeake Bay models at CSDMS in IRF format.
  • Post key common forcing data sets at CSDMS.

Long term

  • Implement additional distinct, swappable land use models, hydrodynamic models, water quality models, ecosystem models, etc., in IRF format at CSDMS.
  • Utilize CSDMS to make side-by-side comparisons of model performance and differences in output by systematically swapping model components.
  • Utilize CSDMS to perform ensemble modeling (i.e., using multiple distinct models) of future Chesapeake environmental conditions under various management scenarios
