Disentangling Rivers
Explaining the morphology of large rivers is a notoriously difficult problem; existing theory fails to predict whether large river systems are meandering, anabranching or braiding. New physics-based modeling combined with rules for vegetation and floodplain evolution capture river morphology remarkably accurately. Prof. Andrew Nicolas of Exeter University, UK, reports results of the HSTAR model showing river channel and bar migration to vary with both sediment characteristics and transport dynamics and with floodplain sedimentation.
