Statement: Modeled subglacial drainage of the Greenland Ice Sheet
Abstract: The animation shows the modeled evolution of the subglacial drainage system and associated ice sliding speed for a catchment south of Jakobshavn Isbræ (Greenland) in 2011. The left panel shows contours of the hydraulic potential and the network of channels; the right panel shows the sliding speed and channels; and the bottom panel shows the meltwater forcing.
Theory
Liquid water is thought to move through the Greenland Ice Sheet as diffuse and channelized flow, and is governed by the pressure field created by the weight of overlying ice. This 2-D model combines the governing equations for both types of flow to model the movement of water in the Greenland Ice Sheet.
