Model domain Terrestrial
One-line model description GUI implementation of the Werner (1995) cellular automata aeolian dune model
Extended model description This model is a GUI implementation of a simple cellular automata dune model. The model was originally proposed by Werner (1995, Geology 23) and has seen several extensions. It can simulate basic barchan, transverse, star, and linear dunes. The model is designed to be easy to operate for researchers or students without programming skills. Also included is a tool to operate the model from ArcGIS.
Keywords:

Describe post-processing software
Visualization software needed? Yes
If above answer is yes ESRI, IDL, Matlab
Other visualization software Any simple GIS viewer that can read ASCII grids.

Describe processes represented by the model Aeolian transport and dune formation.
Describe key physical parameters and equations The model is abstract. Refer to accompanying paper and references therein: Barchyn TE, Hugenholtz CH. 2011. A new tool for modeling dune field evolution based on an accessible, GUI version of the Werner dune model. Geomorphology. Available from:

http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.geomorph.2011.09.021

Or, also, refer to original description of the model: Werner, BT. 1995. Eolian dunes: computer simulations and attractor interpretation. Geology 23, 1107-1110. Available from: http://dx.doi.org/10.1130/0091-7613(1995)023<1107:EDCSAA>2.3.CO;2

Describe length scale and resolution constraints The model is abstract. Ratio of height to horizontal distance resolution is locked at 0.1, but can be modified in the source code and re-compiling.
Describe time scale and resolution constraints The model is abstract. Time given in iterations, relating iterations to real time depends strongly on the climate of the area simulated.
Describe any numerical limitations and issues The model is abstract.

Describe available calibration data sets
Upload calibration data sets if available:
Describe available test data sets
Upload test data sets if available:
Describe ideal data for testing

Do you have current or future plans for collaborating with other researchers? I'd be happy to help facilitate dissemination of extensions or improvements to this model.
Is there a manual available? Yes
Upload manual if available:
