GEOtop Questionnaire

Contact Information

Model: GEOtop
Contact person: Riccardo Rigon (Technical contact)
Institute: University of Trento
City: Trento
Country: Italy
Email: riccardo.rigon@ing.unitn.it
2nd person involved: Stefano Endrizzi (Model developer)
3rd person involved: Matteo Dall'Amico (Model developer)

Model Description

Model type: Modular model for the terrestrial.
Description: GEOtop accommodates very complex topography and, besides the water balance integrates all the terms in the surface energy balance equation. For saturated and unsaturated subsurface flow, it uses the 3D Richards’ equation. An accurate treatment of radiation inputs is implemented in order to be able to return surface temperature.

Technical information

Supported platforms: Linux, Mac OSX, Windows
Programming language: Fortran77, C
Model development started at: 1997 and development still takes place.
To what degree will the model become available: Source code & executable will be available
Current license type: GPLv3
Memory requirements: Dependent on DEM size
Typical run time: Depends on the length of the period simulated

Input / Output description

Input parameters: Please see http://www.geotop.org
Input format: ASCII
Output parameters: Please see http://www.geotop.org
Output format: ASCII
Post-processing software (if needed): Yes, JGrass for visualizing inputs/outputs. Interface with IDL, matlab and R are also being developed.
Visualization software (if needed): Yes, JGrass

Process description

Processes represented by model: Please give a look at: http://www.slideshare.net/GEOFRAMEcafe/geotop-2008?type=powerpoint.
Key physical parameters & equations: Please give a look at http://www.geotop.org
Length scale & resolution constraints: Resolution is limited by RAM. Processes however are parametrized at a few square meter scale.
Time scale & resolution constraints: Most forcings are required at hourly scale. Integration time step is what required by numerical algorithms to converge (depends actually on processes).
Numerical limitations and issues : Any of the processes modeling can be obviously improved.

Testing

Available calibration data sets: There are few test on Rio Corda, a ten square kilometer catchment in Trentino, Italy. Simulations on Little Washita will be made available soon, too.
Available test data sets: Please look at the GEOtop website.
Ideal data for testing: The ideal data set is one as those of Panola catchment.

User groups

Currently or plans for collaborating with: Yes, see list-geotopdev@ing.unitn.it and the developer's website. There is also a list for users: list-geotopusers@ing.unitn.it.

Information at http://www.geotop.org

Documentation

Key papers of the model: All documentation available is on the [www.geotop.org GEOtop wesite]. However, the manual is not up-to-date. A new manual will follow soon.
Is there a manual available: No
Model website if any: http://www.geotop.org
