|One-line model description=Finite Volume two-dimensional shock-capturing model.
|Extended model description=The numerical model solves the two-dimensional shallow water equations with different modes of sediment transport (bed-load and suspended load) (Canestrelli et al. 2009, Canestrelli et al, 2010). The scheme solves the system of partial differential equations cast in a non-conservative form, but it has the important characteristic of reducing automatically to a conservative scheme if the underlying system of equations is a conservation law.  The scheme thus belongs to the so-called category of “shock-capturing” schemes. At the present I am adding a new module for the computation of mud flows, and I want to apply the model to the Fly River (Papua New Guinea) system.

Process

Describe processes represented by the model The numerical model solves the two-dimensional shallow water equations with different modes of sediment transport. Moreover are presently implemented the Savage-Hutter type model describing avalanches of granular materials (not tested yet) and the equations governing the motion of two layers of immiscible fluid.
Describe key physical parameters and equations Momentum and continuity differential equations are solved for each layer. Closure equations are solved for bed-load discharge and entrainment/deposition.
Describe length scale and resolution constraints Hundreds of Km (the reach of a river).
Describe time scale and resolution constraints Days/months. When running for more then few month the simulation time is very large.
Describe any numerical limitations and issues At the present I am trying to improve the wetting and drying algorithm, unphysical large velocities are sometime produced at the wet/dry front.

Testing

Describe available calibration data sets No set of calibration data yet. Comparison with exact solution are available in:
