Title: Innovative Hydrologic and Hydraulic Modeling Using Ultra-High-Resolution Topographic Data to Improve Resilience to Extreme Events in Rural and Urban Areas
Our mission:
The Hydrology and Fluvial Morphodynamics Research Lab (www.idrologia.unimore.it), directed by Prof. Stefano Orlandini at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) in Modena, Italy, is dedicated to both discovery science and solution-oriented research in flood risk management and the sustainable use of water resources. The lab is currently seeking a PhD student to develop and apply innovative hydrologic and hydraulic models that leverage ultra-high-resolution topographic data to improve resilience to extreme events in both rural and urban environments. Surface–subsurface flow models based on geomorphologically informed unstructured terrain partitions offer significantly greater accuracy and computational efficiency compared to conventional models based on regular grids. These advanced models enable the investigation of surface flow processes at spatial and temporal scales that remain poorly understood. As a PhD student, you will have the opportunity to advance knowledge in this field through a combination of data analysis, fieldwork, and numerical modeling. The project involves the use of high-resolution topographic data (1 m or finer) derived from lidar surveys, as well as FORTRAN programming and high-performance computing.
Main duties and responsibilities include:
- Conduct original research in the area of hydrology and high performance computing.
- Contribute to the preparation and publication of articles in high-impact journals.
- Support broader lab activities, including the co-supervision of MSc students.
Ideal Candidate Should Have:
- A Master’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics.
- A creative and enthusiastic mindset, with a willingness to learn.
- Self-motivation and a strong sense of scientific curiosity and innovation.
- A strong interest in catchment hydrology and geomorphology.
- Experience in mathematical or numerical modeling and large-scale data analysis.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Experience with scientific writing.
We offer:
- A stimulating research environment at the Department of Engineering Enzo Ferrari, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Modena, Italy.
- A competitive salary and excellent educational resources.
- The opportunity to conduct state-of-the-art research in a dynamic scientific setting.
- The possibility of a 6-month research stay at a university or research center outside Italy.
Application deadline: June 30, 2025, at 3:30 PM CET.
Start date: November 1, 2025.
Work rate: Full-time.
Duration: Fixed-term, 3 years.
