This project aims to use a constellation of NASA and NOAA satellites to provide the longest data record of global snowfall to better understand how the precipitation phase has changed in the past four decades in response to global warming. The position will consist of yearly contracts, renewable for up to five years depending on funding availability, adequate research performance, and positive contributions to the project. We are looking for a postdoc or a researcher for this position. The position is for 24 months. Department: UMD/ESSIC/CISESS Closing Date: This position is open until a suitable candidate is hired Duties: The Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) is seeking a research scientist to participate in an exciting new research project to simulate riverine temperature and nitrate (NO3) concentration at the regional scale based on NOAA’s National Water Model (NWM) framework. The goal of this pilot project is to develop a framework and methodology that can be expanded to simulate these water quality variables at the NWM continental scale. The quality of water is often as important as the amount of water. Poor quality can endanger life, property, economies and ecosystems. In particular, human activities have significantly increased nitrogen creation by over a factor of 10 compared to the late-19th century. Excess nitrate can cause oxygen depletion, algal blooms, and fish and shellfish reduction. The successful candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team of experts that includes scientists from the NOAA’s Center for Satellite Applications & Research, Fisheries Service, and National Water Center (NWC), and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineer’s Engineer Research and Development Center. The position will be based at ESSIC/CISESS in College Park, Maryland. Primary tasks of this project are to: * Identify and adopt or develop appropriate water quality model(s) and algorithm(s) with capabilities of running over the scale of the NWM in consultation with the NWC; * Implement coupling of nitrate database and the Land surface component of the NWM; * Validate nitrate leaching from the Land Surface model; * Implement offline coupling of NWM v2.0 with riverine water quality module(s), and; * Calibrate and validate simulated riverine temperature and nitrate Qualifications: Doctoral degree in hydrology/water resource systems, earth science, physics, mathematics, engineering, or closely related disciplines. In particular, we seek a candidate with strong data science and modeling skills. This is the 2nd of a pair of post-docs for our research group, with the first hired in paleoecology and carbon cycling in 2024. The postdoc research is part of the Chesapeake Watershed Initiative (CWI; https://www.chesapeakewatershedinitiative.org/home), a research hub in the mid-Atlantic region established by Robert Walter, Dorothy Merritts, Chris Williams, and Patrick Fleming at Franklin and Marshall College with R. K. Mellon Foundation funding in 2021. The postdoctoral scholar will develop a research project that best aligns with their interests and our overall goals to investigate landscape response to change and improve restoration practice and monitoring through scientific investigation. The postdoc research is associated with a large new restoration project, the Blue-Green Connector (https://lccbgc.org/), located along several km of the Little Conestoga Creek (LCC) in southeastern Pennsylvania and with similar projects in the region completed at different times over the past 15 years. The postdoc will lead efforts to establish a monitoring program along the LCC to evaluate landscape response to removing historic sediment and uncovering buried Holocene wetlands upstream of former Colonial-era millponds. Modeling landscape response to this major change could entail, for example, examining changes in streamflow, hyporheic exchange, sediment transport, or nutrient reduction, among other possibilities. The PIs are committed to supporting the postdoctoral scholar to lead peer-reviewed, high-impact publications. The postdoctoral position is funded at $65,000/year plus research funds (including for meetings). It includes doing research with students and teaching one upper-level lab course or two seminars each year in the candidate’s area of expertise. The post-doc could teach a course on stream restoration, for example, and use local sites for field trips as part of the lab component. Financial support is available for students to be part of the postdoctoral scholar’s research group. In addition, the postdoctoral scholar and research students have full access to an impressive array of analytical instruments (a list is available on request). Position Announcement: Two Assistant Professors: Hydrosphere and Structural Geology at Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA The Department of Geology at Occidental College invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2023. We seek colleagues with expertise in 1) the hydrosphere, including but not limited to the interaction of water (including snow, ice, and oceans) with climate, critical zone and atmospheric, lithospheric and surface process, or 2) structural geology and tectonics, especially the deformation of continental crust. Here, we develop advanced population and ecosystem models to address real-world challenges in fisheries and natural resource management. Our work is highly quantitative and applied, and seeks to understand how fisheries resources and marine ecosystems respond to fishing and environmental change. In doing so, we aim to bridge the gap between ecosystem science, stock assessment, and management, while also advancing ecological theories and concepts.
