PhD Position in Urban Water Management
University Innsbruck, , Austria
Apply before: 6 February 2020

The Unit of Environmental Engineering (IUT) is part of the biggest Education and Research Institution in western Austria, which is the University Innsbruck. The IUT belongs to the Department of Infrastructure Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. The IUT seeks to fill a position within field of complex network analysis in urban water management. The water infrastructure is usually organized in pipe networks, supplying water in the city and draining rainfall runoff and wastewater out of it. Alike the city itself, the water networks in cities grew over decades resulting in organic and complex systems. In nature and many engineered systems, networks can be described based on graph theory. Alike, the growth process of water infrastructure over decades follows certain principles, while there are also spatial and functional interdependencies with other transport networks. This PhD project aims to investigate and describe this interlinked growth process of water infrastructure from a network perspective, analyse resilience across infrastructures, and to develop and assess growth scenarios with state of the art hydraulic modelling.
