Statement: Arctic Sea Ice Concentration 2009
Abstract: Daily estimates of the sea ice concentration based on remotely-sensed passive microwave data for 2009. The red colors are 100% sea ice, whereas the blue colors show sea ice free conditions (also called open water).
Theory
Sea ice has retreated far into the Arctic Ocean in the last few years, with 2007 being record low over the last 30 years. The animations shows the evolution of sea ice through winter-spring-summer and fall for 2009, which was the secondmost low year.
