Applications are now open for fully funded PhD studentships with the Centre for Doctoral Training for Resilient Flood Futures (FLOOD-CDT), starting in September 2026.

FLOOD-CDT’s mission is to train the next generation of researchers to tackle flooding – one of the most pressing global challenges of our time – by developing innovative, interdisciplinary solutions for resilient flood futures in the UK and internationally. (flood-cdt.ac.uk).

There are a number of opportunities to work across a wide range of topics under expert supervision at Loughborough, Southampton, Bristol, and Newcastle Universities, and with partners including the National Oceanography Centre, British Geological Survey, and UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.

Each studentship offers:

• A fully funded 3.5-year PhD (fees covered)
• A tax-free stipend of £20,780 per year (UKRI standard rate)
• An additional £8,000 research training and support grant
• Access to bespoke cohort-based training across the whole CDT, industry collaboration, and policy-engagement opportunities

We are keen to attract applicants from a wide range of disciplines, including (but not limited to):

• Geographical, ocean and physical sciences
• Engineering and/or Mathematics
• Life and social sciences
• Data analytics, computer science and artificial intelligence
