Surface Process Modeling Using CMT Course

Project description

This course aims to familiarize earth sciences and engineering graduate students with a number of numerical surface process models and hydrological models available through the Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System (CSDMS) and sets students up to use these tools for your own research purposes.

Objectives

The course involves both lectures and hands-on modeling and aims at:

  • Introduction to CSDMS and High Performance Computing.
  • Lectures on theory and applications of several models.
  • SImulations on the HPCC to explore:

1) stand-alone simulations with HydroTrend and TOPOFLOW hydrological components
2) a coupled hydrological-glaciological model, i.e. TOPOFLOW and GC2D
3) a coupled river-delta model, i.e. HydroTrend and CEM

Time-line

September 2010 - December 2010

Models in use

CSDMS Modeling Tool is used for the simulations in the class room and by the students independently.
Simulations are run with HydroTrend, TOPOFLOW Infiltration, GC2D, Avulsion, and CEM.
Modeling results are visualized with Visit on Beach.

Results

Class room excercises are available from the CSDMS Educational Repository. [[1]]
