CSDMS 2023: Patterns and Processes Across Scales
Subduction dynamics and surface-deep mantle interactions
Abstract
Subduction zones are ever-evolving over a wide range of spatio-temporal scales, and there are a range of interactions between deep mantle flow and surface tectonics which are of relevance for processes from the megathrust cycle to the long-term evolution of the Earth. I review studies that seek to understand a number of the involved processes with a focus on the role of sediments and rheology for subduction rates and deep mantle structure, as well as the thermo-mechanical state of the mantle wedge.
