One-line model description A spatial model for simulation of the full waterbalance, overland flow, flooding and sediment erosion, transport and deposition in all flows.
Extended model description OpenLISEM is an open-source, spatially distributed model that simulates runoff, soil erosion, and flooding at the catchment scale. It supports both kinematic and dynamic wave flow routing and handles sediment dynamics across urban, rural, and mixed land-use environments. The model has two branches: a classic version focused on hydrology and erosion, and a multihazard version extending it to more complex, coupled hazard scenarios.

Describe input parameters raster maps covering terrain, soils, and land use, including DEM, hydraulic conductivity (Ksat), porosity, soil depth, Manning's n, vegetation cover, channel geometry, and land cover maps. Rainfall and ET are provided as ASCII time series text files. All input maps must share the same grid dimensions, and the model accepts any GDAL-supported format — PCRaster binary (.map), GeoTIFF, or ASCII grid — though PCRaster binary is the native format.
Input format ASCII, Binary
Other input format
Describe output parameters The model produces spatial map series (e.g., water height, flow velocity, soil loss) in PCRaster binary or GeoTIFF format, plus ASCII text files with hydrographs and sedigraphs at user-defined outlet points, and catchment-average summary statistics.
Output format ASCII, Binary
Other output format
Pre-processing software needed? Yes
Describe pre-processing software PCRaster (with Nutshell) is the traditional and primary tool for building the input map database; most workflows assume it. The newer multihazard LISEM software can also serve this role and includes its own scripting environment and map viewer. For post-processing, QGIS works well for visualizing spatial outputs (GeoTIFFs in particular), and Python (via rasterio or the LISEM Python bindings) can automate analysis of both map series and ASCII output files.
