Also known as
Model type Modular
Model part of larger framework
Note on status model
Date note status model
Incorporated models or components:
Spatial dimensions
Spatial extent
Model domain Coastal
One-line model description Nearshore Community Model
Extended model description NearCoM predicts waves, currents, sediment transport and bathymetric change in the nearshore ocean, between the shoreline and about 10 m water depth. The model consists of a "backbone", i.e., the master program, handling data input and output as well as internal storage, together with a suite of "modules": wave module, circulation module and sediment transport module.

Describe processes represented by the model NearCoM predicts surface waves and wave-induced nearshore processes such as nearshore circulation, sediment transport and morphological changes.
Describe key physical parameters and equations Wave equations, wave-averaged circulation equations and equations for bedload and suspended-load sediment transport.
Describe length scale and resolution constraints Nearshore regions from shoreline to 10 meter water depth. Model resolution depends on specific modules.
Describe time scale and resolution constraints Hours to months.
Describe any numerical limitations and issues Wave modules have an automatic grid refinement feature. Circulation modules have two kinds: CFL limited and CFL-free schemes.
