One-line model description HydroStreamer downscales coarse-resolution global runoff products onto local river networks using areal interpolation, vector-based river routing, and multi-model ensemble averaging to produce improved streamflow estimates with minimal calibration requirements.
Extended model description HydroStreamer is an R package designed to improve the usability of existing global runoff products by addressing the modifiable area unit problem — the mismatch between the spatial units in which runoff data are provided and those needed for a specific analysis. Its workflow consists of three steps: interpolating runoff from source zones to target zones, routing the interpolated runoff through a vector-based river network, and optionally assimilating multiple runoff products and observed discharge data via model averaging. The package was tested by downscaling coarse-resolution global runoff products from ISIMIP over the 3S Basin in Southeast Asia, achieving comparable or improved performance relative to benchmark streamflow products while requiring minimal data and no extensive calibration.

Describe input parameters distributed runoff time series in raster format — a multi-layer raster where each layer is a timestep, typically sourced from global products like ISIMIP, LORA, or GRUN at 0.5° resolution. These are usually in NetCDF format (binary). Second, a vector river network in a topologically clean format such as a shapefile or GeoPackage — binary vector format. HydroSHEDS is the recommended source for this.
Input format Binary
Other input format Outputs are primarily R objects (data frames and simple feature objects) returned in-memory, containing estimated discharge for each river segment as a time series, interpolated runoff per segment, and optionally model averaging weights and combined multi-model streamflow predictions.
