One-line model description DRYP is a parsimonious distributed hydrological model for dryland regions that simulates water balance partitioning including ephemeral streamflow, transmission losses, and groundwater recharge with minimal data requirements.
Extended model description DRYP is a parsimonious distributed hydrological model specifically designed to simulate the water balance in dryland regions, where water scarcity and episodic rainfall make conventional hydrological models inadequate. It captures the key processes governing water partitioning in these environments, including spatially restricted rainfall, high evaporation rates, ephemeral streamflow, transmission losses, focused groundwater recharge, and soil moisture dynamics, while keeping data requirements deliberately low. Validated against streamflow, evapotranspiration, and soil moisture observations at the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed, it achieved Nash-Sutcliffe efficiencies of around 0.7 for streamflow and soil moisture and above 0.6 for evapotranspiration.
