Our group is highly interdisciplinary and connects coastal engineering directly with coastal geomorphology. The PhD will be in "Systems Engineering" with an emphasis in Coastal Engineering, while the MS is in "Coastal Engineering". We are located in the Department of Civil, Coastal, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE Department website; https://bulletin.southalabama.edu/programs-az/engineering/civil-coastal-environmental-engineering/#text).
Potential research topics include:
- quantifying storm and tsunami geomorphological effects onshore (including fieldwork, lab experiments, and modeling)
- understanding the offshore to onshore wave attenuation and associated wave forces in the nearshore environment
- lab experiments (flume, basin) focused on the hydrodynamics associated with sediment transport events, specifically looking at sediment range of cobbles to boulders (threshold of motion)
Students will also have access to exciting datasets collected recently in Japan (and other locations) that span coral reefs to rocky and sandy coasts to use in their work.
Qualifications: I welcome candidates from across coastal, civil, and environmental engineering to geosciences/earth sciences. A BS (for the Master’s position) and a BS and MS (for the PhD position) in one of these fields is expected for the PhD position. Technical skill sets that would complement lab interests include: GIS experience, field surveying experience (drone, RTK), computational skill sets (e.g., MATLAB, Python), and lab flume experience. 🌊 Strong evidence of alignment of your interests with the lab’s topics as well. For fit, we value curiosity-oriented collaborative mindsets and students who are ready to be part of a fun team, and who are enthusiastic about their work.
How to apply:
Interested students should contact Dr. Spero first by email (hannahsperoresearch@gmail.com) and include a brief statement of interest, unofficial transcripts, and their CV.
Applications will later be through the USA Graduate School website (https://www.southalabama.edu/departments/admissions/graduate.html). Although the deadline for applying may look to be later in the Spring semester, please submit by January 15 at latest, as USA will be considering students for internal support and awards earlier on.
Best,
Dr. Hannah Spero
