From CSDMS
Job opportunity: Expert in flood risk modelling and scenario analysis at UFZ
Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), , Germany
Apply before: 27 October 2026

we are pleased to announce an opening for an expert in flood risk modelling and scenario analysis (preferably at postdoctoral level) to join a new research project on future flood risk assessment in Saxony-Anhalt, funded by the State Ministry for the Environment (MWU).

In this project, you will develop a flexible, machine learning-based approach to estimate future flood risk under changing climatic, demographic, and socioeconomic conditions. Your work will combine climate projections, hydrological model results, spatially explicit asset data, and scenarios of exposure and vulnerability to produce spatially differentiated flood-risk scenarios for Saxony-Anhalt up to 2050+. The results will provide a sound basis for strategic state planning, municipal adaptation concepts, and the prioritisation of flood protection and precautionary measures.

You will join an interdisciplinary team of hydrologists and social scientists and work closely with state authorities and other project partners. The position is based in Halle (Saale), with a working time of 100% (39 hours per week); part-time employment is also possible. The contract is limited until 31 October 2028.

Further details and the online application portal are available here: https://recruitingapp-5128.de.umantis.com/Vacancies/3477/Description/2

The application deadline is 27 October.

We would be very grateful if you could share this opportunity with potentially interested candidates in your network.

Ralf Merz
