The position is ideal for a highly motivated researcher with expertise in hydrological process analysis and modelling who is eager to contribute to a project with strong scientific relevance and high societal impact. The successful candidate will help improve an existing hydrological model setup to assess the effects of individual water management measures at the catchment scale and to develop solutions for future water safety and security in the Elbe basin.
The role involves analysing large datasets of climatic indicators, streamflow, groundwater dynamics, and landscape and subsurface characteristics, then conceptualising these effects for integration into existing hydrological model setups for the Elbe basin. This will support modelling cumulative effects and developing practical solutions for the Elbe River basin.
The position offers close collaboration with colleagues from different disciplines and Helmholtz centres, including UFZ, GFZ, and DLR, as well as key stakeholders such as the UBA, the Elbe River Basin Community, and water management authorities. It is an excellent opportunity for candidates who enjoy analysing catchment-scale hydrological processes and translating them into modelling approaches.
Place of work: Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Halle (Saale)
The planned start date is 1 August 2026, and the contract will end 31 Dec. 2028. The application deadline is 17 May 2026.
Please feel free to share this opportunity with promising candidates in your network.
Best regards,
Ralf
