From CSDMS
PostDoc and PhD position in the ERC synergy grant project 'LIMIT2ADAPT - limits of adaptation to riverine flood risk' at GFZ Potsdam Germany
GFZ Potsdam, , Germany
Apply before: 10 May 2026

I'm pleased to announce an open PostDoc and PhD position in the ERC synergy grant project LIMIT2ADAPT 'When and where do we reach the limits of adaptation to riverine flood risk?' at Section Hydrology, GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam, Germany.

We are seeking a motivated and talented Postdoctoral Researcher & Project manager who will develop exposure and physical vulnerability maps for past and future (1970-2100) and integrate these into a flood risk and adaptation modelling system. You will develop approaches in four case study areas (Rhine, Mekong, Pungwe, Upper Mississippi) and subsequently upscale to the global scale. Full details can be found at: https://www.gfz.de/karriere/stellenangebote/details/11214

We are seeking a motivated and talented PhD candidate who will conduct household surveys in international case study areas, analyse the data and develop a global flood damage model. Your aim is to gain a better understanding of the factors influencing households’ adaptation decisions and how these decisions affect their physical vulnerability and flood risk. Full details can be found at:https://www.gfz.de/karriere/stellenangebote/details/11218

This is an excellent opportunity for candidates who wish to work on a scientifically exciting, socially highly relevant, and globally visible ERC project and who wish to collaborate with international leading scientists and their research groups.

The start date is 1 July 2026; Application deadline is 10th May 2026

Please share this opportunity with candidates who might be a great fit for our team or with your network.

Best regards
Heidi
