Postdoctoral Opportunity: Social Science, Climate Resilience & Water Management (SDSU)

We are pleased to announce an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar at San Diego State University as part of the NSF-funded Advanced Water Resilience through Collaborative Operational Strategies (AWRCOS) Incubator. This position focuses on qualitative social science research, stakeholder engagement, and the co-creation of adaptive water management strategies for California and the San Joaquin Valley.


The postdoc will lead interviews, focus groups, and participatory workshops; collaborate with an interdisciplinary team on Forecast-Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO), Flood Managed Aquifer Recharge (Flood-MAR), and adaptive management frameworks in CA; and contribute to publications, policy briefs, and community-facing outputs. The role is based in San Diego with some travel to the San Joaquin Valley.

We are seeking candidates with strong qualitative research skills, experience working with diverse communities, and interest in climate resilience and water governance. PhD in social sciences, environmental studies, geography, sociology, public policy, water resources engineering or related field. This position is for 1.5 years from Feb 2026 to August 2027. This position is co-supervised by Dr. Amy Quandt and Dr. Erfan Goharian at San Diego State University.
