Position Summary:
The College of Agriculture (CoA) at Arkansas State University-Jonesboro (A-State) invites applications for a tenure-track, 9-month assistant professor in Hydrology/Agricultural Water Management with an anticipated start date of August 2025. The position may include a partial appointment with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture (UADA). The conditions of the appointment will be determined by A-State and in coordination with UADA. Applied research responsibilities will include water resource management and conservation in Arkansas with a focus on development and improvement of systems for agricultural sustainability. The research component will include collaborations with scientists with the USDA-ARS Delta Water Management Unit (DWMRU). Primary teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate and graduate courses in Water Resource Management and Conservation, Hydrology, and Agricultural Irrigation Technology, but they may also include technology and environmental science courses (undergraduate and graduate) supporting interdisciplinary majors at the university.

The successful applicant will have a strong commitment to teaching at all university levels, developing an applied and impactful research program, and providing service to the college, university, and the regional agricultural community.


Duties & Responsibilities:
Teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate and graduate courses in management and conservation of water resources to include decision-making with water quantity/quality issues in agricultural production. Other courses related to expertise and interest of the successful candidate may be developed. The actual teaching assignment will be determined based research productivity and the needs of the university.

Research responsibilities will include developing an applied research program in agricultural water resource management that will reduce reliance on groundwater, increase groundwater recharge, and maintain the quality of groundwater and surface water sources. The incumbent will mentor thesis–level graduate students, secure extramural funding, and publish results in high quality journals. Research outcomes are expected to result in a better understanding of impacts of groundwater withdrawals at the field, farm and watershed scales; 2) improved management practices that conserve groundwater; 3) knowledge of how climate, soils and management affect hydrologic processes; and 4) information that supports current regional, state and local efforts to address regional groundwater problems. The incumbent is expected to develop collaborative research projects with scientists with the USDA-ARS DWMRU, UADA, and A-State faculty with the Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences Program, as well as state and regional agricultural industries and agencies.

As a tenure-track faculty member of the A-State College of Agriculture, service and leadership activities with college and university committees are required. Additional service responsibilities include the outreach/engagement activities relevant to the region’s agricultural community.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Applicants must demonstrate potential for high quality teaching, applied research, and scholarship. The successful candidate will have an interest in interacting with the regional agriculture community. The position requires professional knowledge of hydrology. Additional background in geochemistry, groundwater hydrology, managed aquifer recharge, quantitative data science methods, and awareness of current water policy issues is desired.

Monday – Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Working schedule is determined by teaching/service assignments. Regular and reliable attendance is expected.

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates with post-doctoral experience are preferred; however, candidates near degree completion of the Ph.D. (ABD) may be considered.

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned Ph.D. in Hydrology, Agricultural Engineering, Agronomy, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.

Experience in teaching and student mentoring commensurate with career level.

Evidence of research experience in agricultural water management in one of the areas identified above

Demonstrated skills in written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding
