The Department of Geosciences (https://www.usu.edu/geo/) is a vibrant and growing Earth science program with 15 faculty, three lecturers and two research lab managers. The department offers PhD and MSc degrees, as well as a professional Master’s degree. Research resources include a new rock deformation and fault mechanics lab; laboratories for luminescence dating, light stable isotope, ICP-MS, and X-ray analyses; a microscopy lab with a Raman spectrometer, mineral separation facilities; a field-emission scanning electron microscope, and a microCT scanner.
Earth science research at USU is enhanced by collaborative opportunities through the multidisciplinary Ecology Center (https://www.usu.edu/ecology/), which promotes ecological research at USU and hosts a graduate program in Climate Adaptative Science. USU recently established the Institute for Land, Air and Water (https://www.usu.edu/ilwa/) which connects interdisciplinary research groups at USU with state and local governments to best inform environmental policy. USU departments with high collaborative potential are Civil and Environmental Engineering; Biology; Watershed Sciences; Plants, Soils, and Climate; Wildland Resources; Environment and Society; and Mathematics and Statistics.
Utah State University, established in 1888, is a Carnegie Foundation R1 research institution and the land- and space-grant institution for Utah. The USU campus is nestled in a mountain valley 80 miles north of Salt Lake City, in proximity to excellent outdoor and cultural activities.
The position involves academic research (50%), graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring (40%), and service (10%) to the academic community. The position includes a 25% appointment in USU’s Ecology Center. Successful candidates will demonstrate potential for excellence in research and scholarly leadership through development of a dynamic, externally funded research program. We are especially interested in candidates committed to advancing access and opportunity in the geosciences.
