From CSDMS
PhD scholarship in modelling sediment transport and connectivity at the network scale
University of Padova, , Italy
Apply before: 14 May 2023

Dear colleagues,

the Department of Geosciences of the University of Padova offers a fully funded 3 years PhD scholarship on topics related with modelling of sediment connectivity, sediment transport and fluvial geomorphology.

PhD Project:
This project aims to quantify the reliability of transport and sediment connectivity modelling results within river networks. To assess such reliability, the candidate will first adopt global sensitivity analysis techniques and apply them to existing network-scale sediment transport models (such as CASCADE). The analysis will identify in this way the input parameters that most affect the model simulation results and assess how the network system responds under their variation (such as under different drivers and sediment supplies). Based on such modelling evidence, field data and remotely sensed data analysis will be then used for validation.

Throughout the project, the candidate together with the research team will collect data in selected case studies. Examples of surveys are: surface grain size collection, estimates of sediment inputs from slopes and tributaries, sediment transport estimates from DoD analysis (e.g. generated by drone acquisitions), monitoring of sediment path-lengths through tracers (e.g. RFID).

The Phd will also spend a period abroad at the University of Bristol, Department of Civil Engineering Water and Environmental Engineering, Cabot Institute for the Environment, with Dr Francesca Pianosi to gain expertise on the use of the open-source SAFE Toolbox for sensitivity analysis.

Interested candidates must possess knowledge about fluvial geomorphology, and sediment transport, and some experience with geospatial modeling and programming (e.g. Python and GIS).

I encourage any interested candidate to write to me for additional information and send me a CV and a short motivational letter before the 14th of May.
