From CSDMS
Postdoc opportunity - numerical modeling of climate-geodynamics interactions
University of Milano-Bicocca and CEREGE (Aix en Provence, France), , France
Start reviewing process: 24 February 2023

We are looking for a motivated postdoc to fill a well-funded two-years postdoc opportunity in the frame of the MATRICs-TRAC research projects. The postdoc will work with state-of-the-art numerical climate carbon cycle and geodynamic models to assess the climatic effects of CO2 emissions from the Neo-Tethyan margin throughout the early Cenozoic. Recent developments on the GEOCLIM model allow to quantify several effects potentially affecting the carbon cycle during Eocene perturbations – in particular, the way we account for CO2 emissions, physical erosion due to mountain uplift but also the spatially resolved climate with the use of the IPCC-class model CM5A2 with several potential emerging processes (interactions with shallow water platform as potential organic carbon sink, explicit lithology, vegetation feedbacks).

Possible approaches may thus include, but are not limited to:

  • Compilation of geological data and adaptation/application of existing codes as well as new algorithms and softwares development to geodynamics-climate interactions,
  • Implementation and deployment of likely scenarios of mountain uplift and continental drift, including sensitivity scenarios to classical unconstrained key points (marine gateways, CO2 emissions, orbital parameters),
  • Optimization of workflows including improved data processing, development of platforms to analyze large model outputs, construction of adjoint models (for models of the lithosphere thermal structure), as well as other computational and data science tasks of interest to the study of geodynamics-climate interactions.

Preferred qualifications include PhD in Earth or computational sciences, applied math, engineering, physics, or a related field, demonstrated research experience in geodynamics - climate interactions (at any timescale), proficiency in at least one common programming language (e.g., C/C++, Python, F90), ability to work independently under established deadlines and as part of a team, strong interpersonal communications skills, ability to travel to partner and collaborator institutions, relevant conferences, etc. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
