Below, please find the title and a short description of the doctoral project:
Monitoring and modeling of soil salinization processes in coastal areas connected to irrigation in the presence of shallow groundwater and saline intrusion - The research project aims to evaluate the secondary salinization processes of soils induced by irrigation with saline waters drawn from shallow groundwater in coastal areas. In these areas, a progressive penetration of the saline wedge is expected, also related to climate change, which determines a decrease in recharge flows, induces a growing need for irrigation and thus a greater abstraction of groundwater and deepening of wells for irrigation water. The project will require a hydro-pedological characterization of the soils and of the related spatial variability. Soil properties will then be used as input for physically based dynamic simulations to be conducted using a 1D agro-hydrological model which returns a series of spatio-temporal outputs essential for quantifying the distribution of water and salts along the soil profile and the related percolation flows towards the aquifer. The simulations will be conducted considering different climatic scenarios and a progressive salinization of groundwater induced by seawater intrusion.
Best regards
