[[JOB bodytext::Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – The Research University in the Helmholtz Association creates and imparts knowledge for the society and the environment. It is our goal to make significant contributions to mastering the global challenges of mankind in the fields of energy, mobility, and information. For this, about 9000 employees of KIT cooperate in a broad range of disciplines in research, academic education, and innovation.

For our Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research / Atmospheric Environmental Research (KIT/IMK-IFU) at Campus Alpin in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Division Regional Climate Systems, Research group Regional Climate and Hydrology, we are looking for a

PhD student / Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d)

in the field of operational probabilistic sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) forecasting.

The successful candidate will develop and apply statistical and machine learning based post-processing and regionalization of global S2S forecasts (weeks to months ahead). Specifically, the candidate will systematically explore “seamless” approaches for combining stand-alone sub-seasonal and seasonal forecasts, evaluate the predictive skill of these developed S2S forecasts, improve their performance, and ultimately make the workflow available as “cloud-ready”.

The position is part of an international project on an improved meteorological-hydrological forecasting system for transboundary water management of the Blue Nile River using a “seamless” approach, i.e with intersecting forecast horizons ranging from days to several months. The project will be conducted in close cooperation with Sudanese and Ethiopian partners.

The offered position is embedded in a small thematic team engaged with the post-processing of S2S forecasts and is limited for 3 years.

Your Profile

  • A Master/Diploma in (Geo-)Informatics, Mathematics, Physics, Environmental- or Geo-Sciences, Meteorology, Hydrology, or related fields with strong relation to scientific computing
  • Experience in at least one of the fields of statistical bias-correction, machine learning, big data geoscience, or cloud-computing is desired
  • Strong programming and modern software engineering skills
