From CSDMS
PhD on storm deposits - field-based sedimentology
University of Bern, , Switzerland
Start reviewing process: 15 November 2019

Dear colleagues,

I am currently recruiting for a PhD position associated with a recently funded SNF (Swiss National Fund) grant to use a study storm deposits from a process-sedimentology & stratigraphic approach at the University of Bern (CH).

This project aims to characterize storm-dominated successions in the field and seeks to understand the genesis of these features. The goals are to document large-scale architectures and facies distributions, interpret precise depositional environments, and understand associated forcing parameters.
The primary tasks for the PhD will be: 1. field-based stratigraphic logging and sedimentological characterization, 2. reconstruction of architectures from drone images, and 3. high resolution computed tomography of selected samples. Field work will target Permian deposits in Namibia and Ordovician successions in Morocco and Jordan.
The PhD candidate will work in close collaboration with the PIs to integrate the field data into a larger scale project including in-situ measurements of shallow marine processes as well as numerical modeling and analogue experiments of density currents.

The appointment is for 4 years. The PhD-student will be based at the Institut für Geologie, Universität Bern (CH) and supervised by Guilhem Amin Douillet. The PhD project is closely co-supervised by J.F. Ghienne (CNRS Strasbourg, FR), P. Razin (ENSEGID Bordeaux, FR) P. Dietrich (Geoscience Rennes, FR), F. Schlunegger (IFG Bern, CH). The project will start in early 2020.

Candidates should hold a MSc. degree with a prior experience in fluid dynamics, stratigraphy or numerical modeling. Ability and willingness to carry out challenging fieldwork is essential Experience with or motivation to learn German is important.

Interested candidates should send their application including a CV, short research statement, and contact information of two referees to Guilhem Amin Douillet (guilhem.douillet@geo.unibe.ch). Selection will start immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Please feel free to contact me for further questions and discussions.
Best regards,

Guilhem
