From CSDMS
PhD position on Smart Water Networks at TU Berlin
TU Berlin, , Germany
Apply before: 29 March 2019

The research assistant will carry out research in the Smart Water Networks research group (https://www.swn.tu-berlin.de/), with a focus on the digitization of urban water systems. Sample research questions for this position are: to what extent is digitization transforming urban water systems, as well as water and multi-utilities? Which data-driven tools and sensor data can provide better knowledge to foster a smarter management of urban water networks, supply, and demand?

The candidate will research on assessing the impacts of digitization on heterogeneous water utilities and urban water systems, and will develop data-driven models and tools (exploiting, for instance, techniques for data dimensionality reduction, pattern discovery, machine learning) to support utilities’ decisions to manage urban water supply and demand under future scenarios. These will include models to forecast water demand at various spatial and temporal scales, automatic tools to identify anomalies in distributed sensors data and urban water systems (e.g., leakages), tools to support the automatic control of urban water networks, and joined optimization of urban water and energy systems.

The tasks for this position include (i) the publication of the research outcomes in scientific papers, (ii) contributions to the teaching activities of the research group, and (iii) guidance to BSc/MSc students in their thesis preparation. Finally, the position also includes the option to prepare a PhD thesis within the scope of the research project’s topics.
