EO Data Science Researcher for Implementing a Drought Early Warning System

Eurac Research is an interdisciplinary research center located in Bolzano, Italy. At the Institute for Earth Observation (EO) we do research on the monitoring of environmental parameters and processes with earth observation, exploiting physical and machine learning models, mainly focusing on the Alpine region. One of our main interests is assessing the impact of drought on the water cycle and on vegetation. In this context, we will implement a new drought early warning system for mountain catchments. The person we are looking for will support our institute by developing scientific concepts and algorithms in the field of “Earth Observation” working in the group “Earth Observation for Environmental Monitoring”.

Tasks:

  • Pre-processing and analyzing satellite data from optical and radar sensors
  • Analyzing timeseries of climate and hydrological data
  • Implementing and testing machine learning models for predicting drought impacts
  • Writing scientific publications

Requirements:

Essential

  • PhD in environmental or informatics engineering, or master’s degree in similar disciplines followed by some working experience in the field of earth observation for the monitoring of environmental dynamics
  • Experience in working with earth observation data, including image pre-processing
  • Experience in programming in the earth observation domain
  • Basic knowledge of machine learning methods
  • Experience working with a Linux environment and command-line (shell)
  • Good knowledge in at least one programming language such as Python or R
  • Good understanding and experience of geospatial data (raster & vector)
  • Ability in team working, good communication, motivation to learn and flexibility.
  • Very good English (spoken and written). Italian and/or German skills are highly appreciated
  • Relocating to Bolzano

Desired

  • Data analysis and visualization skills for spatial and temporal data
  • Basic knowledge of hydrological and climate processes
  • Basic knowledge of earth observation software tools such as Sentinel Toolboxes
  • Knowledge of GIS Systems (GRASS software suite, QuantumGIS, ArcGIS, etc.)
