Postdoctoral opportunity at Washington University in St. Louis
Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, United States
Start reviewing process: 15 August 2020

Dear colleagues,

I am writing to advertise an 18-month postdoctoral researcher position at the nexus of geomorphology and environmental justice in my lab group at Washington University in St. Louis. The postdoctoral researcher will work as part of a collaborative team, led by José Constantine (Williams) and myself.

The position is focused on exploring upland controls on floodplain channel dynamics and identifying drivers of flooding in the Centreville community in East St. Louis. You can read more about the historic flooding issues in Centreville here and about the broader project, here.

The main scientific objectives of the postdoctoral researcher are:

  1. identify sources of erosion and deposition in floodplain channel catchments through change-detection methods (UAV and ground-based SfM)
  2. identify timing and magnitude of flooding in floodplain channels (modeling and monitoring)
  3. quantify modern deposition rates (short-lived radiogenic nuclides).

As part of the larger team, the postdoctoral research will also have opportunities to

  1. Work with community stakeholders and advocates, including the Equal Housing and Opportunity Council of St. Louis, Equity Legal Services, and members of the Centreville community.
  2. Serve as a mentor for a paid summer internship to students from Harris-Stowe University, an HBCU based in St. Louis.
  3. Participate in drafting a final report based on results of the study, which will be used to guide future mitigation efforts.

Start date is flexible. Interested parties should contact me and José Constantine (jac9@williams.edu) with an up-to-date CV and a short statement of interest.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions about this opportunity.

Best,
Claire
