From CSDMS
New PhD opportunity at the University of Kiel and the University of Potsdam
University of Kiel and the University of Potsdam, , Germany
Apply before: 31 January 2020

Dear colleagues,

we are seeking a highly motivated candidate for a fully funded 3-year-PhD-project to study Holocene and Late Pleistocene sedimentation and deformation patterns at the northwestern Indian Himalayan front. The project is a joint study between the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel and the University of Potsdam.

The aim of the project is to better understand the feedbacks and interactions between tectonics, erosional processes, and spatiotemporal behavior of orogenic wedges. Modeling studies of foreland systems adjacent to wedge-shaped fold-and-thrust belts suggest that the long-term interaction between deformation, topographic growth, and erosional processes may ultimately dictate the locus of tectonic activity. Importantly, changes in sediment loads within the wedge alter the crustal stresses and may thus modify the activity of linked thrust-faults arrays, which makes seismic hazard assessment of such regions a daunting tasks. Accordingly, this change in the net mass balance may in turn play a role in changing the regional deformation pattern of the Himalayan orogenic wedge by (re-) activating fault arrays, and inducing earthquakes in different seismotectonic sectors. Unambiguous field validation and the recognition of the most relevant timescales over which such forcing mechanisms may be active are the ultimate goal of this study.

Candidates must have a MSc or equivalent degree and fluently speak English. Experiences with foreland basin tectonics and sedimentation, tectonic geomorphology, and various Quaternary dating techniques is an asset. Good knowledge of the mathematical and physical description of process models will be an advantage. Chemistry lab experience will be a further advantage. Command of the German language is welcome but not required.

The application should contain a cover letter with your motivation and CV (containing a complete overview of education, supervised professional training and professional work) and publications (if applicable), as well as the name and contact information of at least two references.

Further inquiries about the position can be obtained contacting Rasmus Thiede (CAU-Kiel) or Bodo Bookhagen (Univ. Potsdam).

Applications should be sent as a single pdf file (max 5 MB) to rasmus.thiede@ifg.uni-kiel.de and will be accepted until End of January and until the position is filled. Candidates are expected to start during the first half of 2020.
