Spectral modeling of Alaska North Slope permafrost landscape phenology

Satellite and in-situ observation data has enabled phenologic monitoring of high-arctic vegetation relative to weather and climate pattern, yet it remains poorly understood how permafrost landscape features and geomorphology influences phenology. In this study, we build a spectral phenology model based on satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) at a 10-meter resolution to understand annual patterns of vegetation greening and browning on water track and thermo-erosional gullies in Toolik area of Alaska's North Slope. From our phenology model we derived high-resolution inferences for summer snow-off dates and a preliminary understanding of differential phenologic behavior of water tracks and thermo-erosional gullies.
