Metadata

Also known as Blocky Landscape Evolution Model
Model type Single
Model part of larger framework
Note on status model
Date note status model
Incorporated models or components:
Spatial dimensions 2D
Spatial extent Landscape-Scale, Watershed-Scale, Reach-Scale
Model domain Terrestrial
One-line model description BlockLab computes landscape evolution in the presence of large blocks of rock on hillslopes and in channels.
Extended model description Blocklab treats landscape evolution in landscapes where surface rock may be released as large blocks of rock. The motion, degradation, and effects of large blocks do not play nicely with standard continuum sediment transport theory. BlockLab is intended to incorporate the effects of these large grains in a realistic way.

Describe processes represented by the model Cliff failure and retreat; hillslope evolution; river erosion; block release, transport, and weathering.
Describe key physical parameters and equations River and hillslope erosion coefficients, hillslope weathering parameters; initial block size, block release/motion thresholds, block weathering rate.
Describe length scale and resolution constraints Standard LEM constraints on length scale: reach scale and above until you run out of computing power. Resolution is constrained by block size, should generally be order 1-10 m.
Describe time scale and resolution constraints Timesteps in the range of 1-10 years are generally stable, can run for as long as desired until the memory runs out.
Describe any numerical limitations and issues Becomes unstable at timesteps much greater than 10 years.
