Reports

The CCMP FRG had its first meeting in Annapolis on April 3rd. The following target goals have been formulated by attendees. Each one identified his areas of interest and responsibilities. Here is what we have:

Wen:

  • CCA application in the Bay area. Do a simple application. Couple some models.
  • we need new people, students and technical staff - teaching and training - getting more funding
  • ChesROMS has some add-ons - work with ROMS and bring it in as a component
  • Consider getting new hires to work with Bay projects at CSDMS and to work with the CCA and CSDMS standards here

Chris:

  • Data-model integration - how do they talk? - what are the tools? - synchronizing data and models
  • HIS people are working on observational models to go to different sources of data and pull it in in a standard format - WaterML
  • Visualization tools -
  • PIHM - sediment model - 3D equations - solute transport - all this will go to the CSDMS site - already on SourceForge - working on NetCDF - non-structured grid
  • Get a person who can spend time at the Boulder shop - write a proposal for an NSF fellowship - get money to fund this person at CRC
  • Short statement for this hire

Raleigh:

  • Find funding for dedicated person
  • Joint CSDMS/CCMP person - industrial consortium - find corporate moneys - work with Kevin

Carl:

  • Using ROMS for sediment transport - version of ROMS that is usable - a module in CSDMS
  • Connect ROMS with other models - get a generic ROMS with clearly identified connections to use in various applications
  • 1-D applications GOTM - open source, in Germany - can become a module - Tom Hsu
  • Data assimilation

Andrew:

  • Urban watersheds - assimilating data from dense networks - using different existing models
  • CUASHI HIS interaction
  • Coupling urban growth and hydrologic models - how to integrate Urban modules

Larry:

  • Matlab to Python
  • Sediment transport models

Peter:

  • Sediment transport models and mechanisms
  • Computational tools for people who don’t have much skills - small simple codes in Visual Basic -
  • Interoperability
  • 1D routing model Corps HEC RAS - get it into open source
  • Using high resolution topography - GIS
  • Portal to CSDMS has to be more enticing - needs coordinating documents - needs other formats

Gary:

  • Model applications
  • Putting fully functional models on the web site - posting applications together with data - SIMS database
  • Model wrappers
  • Use BOINC - set up a distributed computational project - see http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

Alexey:

  • Applied models driven by users. Participatory modeling.
  • Models for decision support
  • Liking between models and frameworks of various complexity and scale
  • Integrated modeling
  • Help to write a proposal to hire a CSDMS/CCMP liaison programmer
