MAST-1D sand and mud

Metadata

Also known as MAST 1D Minnesota
Model type Single
Model part of larger framework
Note on status model there is a mix grain size model by Wes Lauer and Katherine De Rego https://github.com/MAST-1D/MAST-1D-2.0 and an equilibrium (analytical) solution by Viparelli and Eke https://github.com/vipenrica/Channel-geometry
Date note status model 2025-12-12
Incorporated models or components:
Spatial dimensions 1D
Spatial extent Reach-Scale
Model domain Terrestrial
One-line model description The model simulates the co-evolution of a single thread sand bed river and its floodplain in 1D
Extended model description Given the hydrologic regime (flow duration curve) and the sediment supply rate (annual sand load and rating curve for mud), the model imposes sediment mass conservation to simulate changes in channel and floodplain elevation, channel bankfull width, depth and discharge, as well as point bar height and grain size distribution, overbank deposition rates, centerline or bank migration rates.
Keywords:

floodplain morphodynamics, channel morphodyanmics, sand and mud,

Describe processes represented by the model the module describes how channel bed profile, channel width and depth, as well as bankfull discharge, can change due to the imbalance between the hydrologic regime (flow duration curve), the supply of sand and mud, sand transport capacity and exchange of sand and mud between the channel and the floodplain for point bar deposition, bank migration and overbank deposition.
Describe key physical parameters and equations Model governing equations express the conservation of sand and mud in the floodplain, in the channel bed and in the water column. The active layer approximation is implemented. Sand transport rates are computed with an Engelund and Hansen-type load relation, overbank deposition rates are computed with empirical closures. Channel migration and point bar height can be fixed or can vary in space and time following the work by Ikeda et al. (1981) or Eke et al., (2014).
Describe length scale and resolution constraints the module operates at the reach scale (10 - 100s of kilometers)
Describe time scale and resolution constraints the module works at time scales of a decade or longer.
Describe any numerical limitations and issues reach-averaged channel sinuosity is assumed to be fixed, sand is modeled in terms of a single grain size and floodplain topography (floodplain channels) is not considered.

Describe available calibration data sets The model has been applied to simulate the Minnesota River widening and the manuscript is currently in review with the Journal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface
Upload calibration data sets if available:
Describe available test data sets
Upload test data sets if available:
Describe ideal data for testing

Do you have current or future plans for collaborating with other researchers? We are working on the model to relax the assumptions of fixed width, absence of floodplain topography and single grain size. Future plans also involve integrating the sand and mud and the gravel version in a single module.
Is there a manual available? No
