Code of Conduct

The Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System (CSDMS) hosts a variety of events, including but not limited to annual meetings, workshops, and webinars during which participants are encouraged to actively engage and share their ideas. CSDMS is committed to fostering a professional, respectful, inclusive environment at all these events, such that all participants can participate to the fullest in a welcoming, respectful, inclusive, and collaborative environment that is free of harassment and discrimination. CSDMS expects all participants and staff to comply with this code of conduct.

Examples of behavior that will not be tolerated

  • Taking part in or encouraging bullying, discrimination, intimidation, microaggressions or any other form of harassment at the meeting location, online, and/or on social media.
  • Making any individual or group feel unwelcome, or encouraging ostracism.
  • Targeting participants in a way that could harm them privately or professionally.
  • Abuse of participants, including presenters, staff members, or others involved in the event. Abuse includes but is not limited to comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religion, nationality, as well as disproportional verbal or physical disagreement on scientific ideas.
  • Threatening, deliberate intimidating, or stalking in-person or online.
  • Disrupting the event.
  • Showing of sexual content and/or unwanted sexual advances.
  • Failing to follow protocols that apply to the meeting venue.

What if you are harassed or bystander of a harassment?

Reach out to one of the online or local organizers right away, or contact local law enforcement as needed.

Consequences of violating the Code of Conduct

In the event of harassment, we will ensure that the harassment stops immediately. And we'll take proper action to unsure your safety for the remainder of the event.

The following actions may be taken

  • A warning to the offender not to repeat unacceptable behavior
  • Expulsion from the event without a refund
  • Banning participation in future CSDMS related events
  • Reporting the incident to authorities of the venue
  • Reporting the incident to law enforcement
